Diving The Salish Sea After Dark

There is something about standing at the edge of the Salish Sea at night that never gets old.

During the day, the Salish Sea gives you plenty to look at before you ever enter the water. You can watch the surface, see the shoreline stretching away in either direction, and sometimes catch a glimpse of the bottom beneath you.

At night, all of that changes.

Moonlight may shimmer across the surface. Lights along the shore mark houses, docks and roads. Dive lights move through the darkness as people prepare to enter the water. You can still see the Salish Sea. You just can’t see very far into it.

Standing at the edge, my light catches the water immediately in front of me. Beyond it, the surface fades into darkness. Whatever is beneath it remains hidden.

And then I walk into it.

I love that moment.
